The National Palace of Ajuda has a history filled with challenges and changes.
What stands today is not the original structure planned many years ago.
King John V envisioned it as a summer retreat in the early 18th century.
Construction only kicked off after a massive earthquake in 1755 destroyed Lisbon's royal residence, Paço da Ribeira.
The first incarnation of the palace was built from wood but tragically burned down in 1794.
The more durable building that you can visit today was then constructed to replace it.
The palace remains a significant venue, hosting ceremonies for both the Republic and the presidency.
